A PAPER ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF YOUR SMARTPHONE ON YOUR BRAIN AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT
Here’s the problem of our generation; we’re addicted to our smartphones and don’t fully understand their limitations on our brains. We realize how it takes up too much of our time and that it’s bad for us, but we don’t understand why. Well, our bodies have a stress hormone inside of us called cortisol. When this cortisol is released, it triggers a fight or flight response inside of us, a response that quickens our heartbeat and makes us jolt. Every time a notification buzzes on our phones, this response is triggered as we jump to see who it was from.
A single alert from our phone causes a response in our bodies meant to outrun danger. In the long run, if we keep allowing this to happen, our prefrontal cortex can shut down and make our brains more “noisier”- something that can lead to ADHD.
We need to solve this issue before it gets worse. A good way to decrease the effects of your smartphone on your brain is by putting it away and spending some time away from it. Deep work has really been shown as a great way to get yourself off of your phone and into your work. To understand more about why this works and the research behind it, read my paper. I hope you enjoy it and it helps you out!
